Description

The Royal Austrian Navy est. 1797, was the naval force of the Austrian Empire, guarding its Adriatic coastline and defending imperial power at sea. Its main naval base was at Port Trieste. The navy flew the black and yellow imperial colors and served directly under the authority of the Kaiser. In the 1860s, Austria was a fierce rival of the Kingdom of Italy. Tensions between the two powers led to open war during the Austro-Prussian War. At sea, the conflict became especially intense. The Austrian fleet sailed across the Adriatic to challenge Italian control and strike enemy forces before they could threaten Austrian territory. The navy earned lasting fame at the Battle of Lissa, where it attacked and defeated a larger Italian fleet. Austrian ships boldly charged into battle, closing distance and ramming enemy vessels in close combat. The victory showed that Austria could stand strong against Italy on the open sea and defend its empire FÜR DAS VATERLAND
