Description
The California Department of Justice (CA DOJ) was formally established in 1943, evolving from the earlier Department of Penology to become the state’s top investigative and legal authority. Operating under the elected Attorney General, the DOJ serves as California’s central law enforcement agency, legal counsel, and guardian of civil rights. Its roots stretch back to 1850, when the Office of the Attorney General was created to bring order to a chaotic legal landscape in the newly minted state.
