Description

In 1854, amid growing tensions over the future of the Union of Columbia, a group of patriots, farmers, businessman, and community leaders gathered in Lander and established the National Republican Party of Columbia. Drawing from the revolutionary spirit of 1776 that freed the nation from Pax Britannia, the NRPC was created to defend the Union, champion states’ rights, promote free enterprise, uphold law and order, and protect traditional Columbian values of liberty and self-reliance. The party quickly became a major national force, especially strong in Mayflower and its counties. Many early members later fought to preserve the Union during the Columbian Civil War in the 1860s.
