Galveston Militia #232681354
Description
𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 – 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚 “The Sea Fencibles” The Galveston Militia, often called the Sea Fencibles, was organized in 1839 to help defend the Republic’s principal port and growing island settlement. Composed of citizens, sailors, and merchants, the company supported local defenses by watching the harbor, assisting with coastal guns, and aiding Army, Navy, and Marine detachments during periods of alarm. Serving as a civic guard and maritime defense company, the Sea Fencibles reflected the island community’s need for immediate protection in the absence of large permanent garrisons. Though small in number, they provided a ready force against raids and sudden threats during the uncertain years of the Republic. As guardians of the harbor, the Galveston Militia represented local commitment to the security of Texas’s chief port until annexation ended the Republic’s independent service. Regiment Cap: 10
