Description
The Taíno (meaning Noble People) was a pre-columbian, Arawakan-Speaking, dominant indigenous tribe that inhabited the Greater Antilles and Parts of Lesser Antilles of Modern Day Hispaniola, Jamaica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and The Bahamas. Living in chiefdoms (cacicazgo in Spanish) in the island of Hispaniola into 5 chiefdoms. Chiefdom of Marién, Maguá, Maguana, Jaragua, and Higüey. The Taínos are known for their sophisticated agricultural systems, seafaring capabilities and their distinct pottery.
