It is de facto a professional army, because conscription was suspended on 5 February 1995. The army has 30,174 employees and 1,673 reservists. Commander-in-chief is King Philip of Belgium, Minister of Defense since 2014 ###### ######## (N-VA). The Chief of Defense, Chief of Staff of the General Staff, has been General Marc Compernol since 13 July 2016. Under the Belgian Ministry of Defense, besides soldiers, there are also about two thousand citizens.
