In 1808, Napoleon reorganised the artillery of the Imperial Guard and formed six companies of foot artillery equipped with heavy 12-pounder guns. These artillerymen were trained to operate powerful batteries in support of the Guard, concentrating their fire against enemy infantry, artillery, and fortified positions.
