Compagnia di San Giorgioᅟ #283353596
Description
The Compagni Di San Giorgio was raised in 1378 by Albercio Da Barbiano. The original part of his company was a group of 200 lances from his lands north of Faenza in Romagna (Cunio, Lugo di Romagna, Massalombarda, Barbiano, Cotignola) formed in 1377. When he formed the rest of his company a year later, it would be recruited from his fiefdoms in Romagna in the aforementioned places. Soon Italians from the regions around Romagna in northern and central Italy were added by incorporating small groups of Italians in other companies. Romagnols would continue to be the majority. Alberico only used Italians, for he did not like the actions of foreign mercenaries, his men being the perpetual enemies of foreigners and barbarians. His company first served Bernabo Visconti, the Papal States in 1379 where he became a Knight of Christ and received a flag, then Naples in 1380 where he became Grand Constable. In 1382 the company was disbanded being absorbed into the Neapolitan army.
