Description
After the end of World War II, Czechoslovakia found itself caught between the growing influence of the West and the expanding power of the Soviet Union. While communists gained support after the war, President Edvard Beneš and several senior military officers feared that a Soviet-backed takeover would destroy the republic’s democracy. In February 1948, when communist leaders attempted to force themselves fully into power through strikes and political pressure, the army and police remained loyal to the government instead of siding with the Communist Party. Massive anti-communist demonstrations broke out across Prague, Brno, and Bratislava, and with quiet diplomatic support from Britain and the United States, the coup collapsed before Soviet forces could intervene. The Communist Party was banned soon after, and Czechoslovakia remained one of the few democratic nations in Central and Eastern Europe.
