Now more than ever, the young nation needs loyal patriots to serve her interests, both in the military and in her government. America's legislators and citizens quickly found themselves in one of two parties. On one side stand the Federalists, a coalition of bankers and businessmen who believe in a strong central government, a national bank, and good relations with the British Empire. On the other stand the Democratic-Republicans, a union of planters, traders, and artisans who believe in states' rights, strengthening individual freedoms, and hostility against the British.
