Description
The State of Washington was established along the northwest coast of the United States following exploration and settlement by British and American pioneers in the 19th century. The region had human settlements spanning thousands of years with indigenous Coast Salish and Interior tribes, with European and American maritime fur-trading posts sporadically created along the coast and Puget Sound in the late 18th century. The state was established as an entity of the United States on November 11, 1889, following decades as a territory and its separation from the Oregon Country. It encompasses a variety of natural areas, including the Cascade and Olympic mountains, dense rainforests, the arid Columbia Plateau, and numerous waterways, sounds, and rivers that divide the land and create state boundaries. The state is made up of 39 administrative areas, including King County, Pierce County, Snohomish County, and Spokane County. The state is seated in the City of Olympia.
