The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) traces its origins to the 1852 Game Act, which protected species like elk, deer, and salmon. In 1870, the state formed the Board of Fish Commissioners, the first wildlife agency in the U.S., later evolving into the Department of Fish and Game in 1951. Renamed in 2013 to reflect its broader ecological mission, CDFW now manages wildlife, habitats, and conservation efforts across California. From enforcing poaching laws to restoring native ecosystems, it remains a guardian of biodiversity and public stewardship.
