𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 ; 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐈 ▬ ⚔️ The Asthetairoi, a select corps within the Pezhetairoi, held a place of prestige and mystery. Some link their name to the asty — the cities — others to the aristoi — the best. They stood closest to the king, beside the Hypaspists on the right of the line, attached to the Taxis of Tymphaea. 🛡️ More than ordinary spearmen, they were better armed and disciplined, fighting where the line strained most. Tasked with guarding the king’s flank, they held firm against the fiercest assaults. 🤝 To join the Asthetairoi was to be more than a soldier — a “closest companion,” bound by loyalty, valor, and service to the crown.
