Description

𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐱𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐬 - 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬 Organized during the “Runaway Scrape” by General Sam Houston on April 8, 1836, the 2nd Regiment of Texas Volunteers organized the rapid influx of citizen-soldiers arriving from eastern settlements and the United States. Comprising nine companies totaling 250 to 300 men, it became the largest regimental infantry formation on the field. Under their elected colonel, Sidney Sherman, the regiment specialized in skirmishing, screening maneuvers, and rapid deployment, consistently serving as the army's advance guard. After probing enemy lines on April 20, the regiment held the critical far-left flank during the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21. Initiating the decisive flanking charge, they famously raised the war cry “Remember the Alamo! Remember La Bahia!” and broke the Mexican lines, proving that rapidly assembled volunteers could match veteran regular troops.
