Description
I don't think Mellow's character was developed well enough in the anime for most fans to appreciate him. It really takes reading the manga or the novels he wrote to get a good inside view into Mellow's head. While I think L will always be my favorite, Mellow is a close second, because you're right he really does steal the show. He's not interested in the game of cat and mouse in the same way L was, nor is he concerned about proving to a justice system that he's right. He wants Kira's head on a platter. It's all about avenging L, beating Near, and proving he's the best. Arguably he's a more well rounded character than L, as he lacks the childishness and hypocrisy L displayed at times. The real shame is that he never gets the credit he truly deserves either. Some people theorize that Mellow was aware he would have to sacrifice his life in order to bring Kira down.
