Description
The Army of the Potomac was the main Union army in the Eastern Theater during the American Civil War. Formed in 1861, it fought in major battles such as Antietam, Gettysburg, and Petersburg. Through years of difficult campaigns, the army helped defeat the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and contributed to General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865.
