(A Work In Progress) Elis was an ancient city-state in Greece, located on the Peloponnesus. The city was able to dominate the smaller cities around it through unequal treaties and military force. The most famed settlement under Elis was Olympia, the place where the Olympic games were hosted in ancient times. This tradition has lasted well into the modern era.
