The Committee for State Security was the principal security and intelligence agency of the Soviet Union, tasked with safeguarding the state from internal and external threats. Throughout the Cold War era, the KGB conducted intelligence gathering, counterintelligence, internal security operations, and the protection of state leadership and strategic interests. Operating in secrecy and discipline, it served as the unseen defender of the Union and its ideology.
