📯 The German Empire was formed in 1871, though the unification was a gradual process. Germany's unification was opposed by the Austrians, who wished to keep their influence in the South German kingdoms, and the French, who, under Napoleon III, wanted to restored the 1814 borders. 🪖 The predecessor to the German Empire, the North German Confederation, was formed in the aftermath of a war against Austria in 1866, and the German Empire was born in the aftermath of the War, in 1871. It soon became one of the most powerful nations in Europe at the time.
