Description
The Antigonid Kingdom was the final Macedonian dynasty to rule over Greece, standing as a bastion of Hellenistic power in the face of rising Roman dominance. Founded by Antigonus I Monophthalmus and solidified by Antigonus II Gonatas, the Antigonids upheld the legacy of Alexander the Great while forging their own path through war, diplomacy, and cultural flourishing. From the wars of the Diadochi to the decisive battles against Rome, the Antigonid kings fought to maintain Macedonian supremacy in the Greek world. The true legacy of the Antigonid dynasty lies in its military resilience, political ingenuity, and dedication to Hellenistic tradition. Rulers like Philip V and Perseus waged relentless wars to preserve their kingdom, while cities like Pella and Thessalonica thrived as centers of Greek culture and administration. Though Macedon ultimately fell to Rome after the Battle of Pydna (168 BCE), the Antigonid dynasty ensured that the spirit of Macedonian kingship endured.
