79th New Yоrk Highlanders #32564812
Description
𝟕𝟗𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 The 79th New York Infantry Regiment (dubbed the "Cameron Highlanders" or the "New York Highland Guard") was an infantry regiment raised in 1858, originally part of the New York State Militia. Their primary service before the war was guarding state buildings and putting on parades for dignitaries and statesmen. Come 1861 with the outbreak of the civil war, the 79th was quickly mobilized while understrength (having just under 350 men in 1859), forcing them to recruit and raise their numbers to over 800 men strong by the month of June. The regiment would go on to become one of the most traveled and rugged regiments of the Union, seeing service at practically every major engagement of the war from the Battle of Bull Run in 1861 to the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864.
