Description
Our Discalced Carmelite Order of Nuns is a Roman Catholic religious order devoted to contemplative prayer and a life of simplicity, poverty, and solitude. Founded in the 16th century by our Holy Mother St. Teresa of AviIa and Our Holy Father St. John of the Cross, the order emphasizes a return to the strict observance of the primitive Rule of the Carmelite Order, also known as the Rule of St. Albert. "Discalced" means "shoeless," symbolizing the humility and simplicity sought in the spiritual path. The nuns live in enclosed communities, dedicating their lives to prayer and penance for the Church and the world, following a daily rhythm of liturgical prayer, silent meditation, and work. Their life is marked by a deep love for Christ, expressed through their commitment to contemplative prayer and community living under the vows of poverty, ceIibacy and obedience.
