Description
The Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897) was a Korean dynastic kingdom that ruled the Korean Peninsula for over five centuries. Founded by Yi Seong-gye, who became King Taejo, the dynasty replaced the Goryeo Dynasty and established Confucianism as the state ideology, deeply shaping Korean society, politics, and culture. Joseon is known for significant achievements, including the creation of the Korean alphabet (Hangul) by King Sejong the Great in the 15th century, major advances in science and technology, and a centralized bureaucracy based on Confucian ideals. The dynasty experienced periods of prosperity, but also challenges, including internal strife, factionalism, and invasions by Japan (Imjin War) and later the Manchus. Joseon maintained a strict social hierarchy and Confucian moral order, which influenced Korean identity for centuries.
