Description
The USS Roanoke's keel was laid down in 1854 in Norfolk Navyard in Virginia. She was then launched in 1855 where she was then re-commissioned and de-commissioned 3 times. Where, in 1861 she was once again re-commissioned to aide in the blockade of rebel ports. She did a fantastic job of this capturing and sinking several Confederate Vessels. Then after this outstanding performance she was converted to a Monitor. She was one of the first vessels in history to have more than 2 turrets. However this conversion was a tad sloppy, as she tended to roll excessively and the weight of her armor strained her aging hull. Despite all this she was set asail again and in the final years of the war she would spend her days guarding Hampton Roads. Until, in 1883, she would be sold for scrap.
