The conflict fragmented the country politically, as various factions and militias, each with their own sectarian and political interests, took control of different regions. Central authority weakened significantly, leading to a divided nation. Sectarian violence was a central feature of the war, with clashes occurring between Christians, Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims, and Druze.
