Description
Organized in July 1846 for a six-month term of service, the 1st Regiment of Texas Mounted Volunteers, comprising seven companies, was raised primarily for the defense of the Texas frontier during the opening months of the war with Mexico. Commanded by Colonel William C. Young, the regiment was tasked with guarding settlements, patrolling exposed districts, and maintaining security against incursions while other volunteer forces operated beyond the Rio Grande. Drawn from experienced horsemen and local militia elements, the unit reflected Texas’ reliance on rapid mounted response for internal security. Its service concluded in September 1846, when the regiment was discharged after fulfilling its defensive obligations.
