Hikone Domain [BKJ] #33022108

Description
The Hikone Domain, centered around Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture, was governed by the Ii clan during the Bakumatsu era. Constructed in the early 17th century, Hikone Castle played a strategic role along the Tokaido road. In the 1850s and 1860s, Ii Naosuke, the daimyo of Hikone, became a key figure in the Tokugawa shogunate's attempts to navigate internal dissent and external pressures from Western powers. His ############# stance and the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce led to his assassination in 1860. The Hikone Domain later faced challenges during the Boshin War (1868-1869), resulting in the end of the feudal era with the Meiji Restoration. Despite the Ii clan's loyalty to the shogunate, they underwent significant changes in the Meiji period, losing traditional privileges. Hikone Castle remains as a well-preserved symbol of the region's history during this transformative period.
