Description
Before the Punic Wars, Syracuse was a powerful Greek city-state located on the eastern coast of the island of Sicily. Founded around 734 BCE by settlers from Corinth, it grew to become one of the most influential and prosperous cities in the Mediterranean. Syracuse was known for its impressive cultural, political, and military strength, with its strategic location making it a key player in the power struggles of the ancient world. Under the rule of tyrants like Dionysius I and later his son Dionysius II, the city expanded its territories and exerted control over much of Sicily. Syracuse boasted a strong navy and was a prominent force in the Greek colonies, often in conflict with Carthage, which also sought control of the island. Its importance was further solidified by the construction of remarkable architectural works, such as the grand theater and massive city walls. Despite internal strife, Syracuse maintained its dominance as one of the greatest Greek city-states in the Pre-Punic.
