Description
A man strikes a light for himself in the night, when his sight is quenched. Living, he touches the dead in his sleep. He is beside them, but does not see; he touches, but does not feel, he moves only within himself, and for himself alone; waking, he touches the sleeper. The vast night stretches out, holding the city of lights in the cradle of its palm. Through its translucent haze, rays peer between the clouds; I trace the ribbons of light—and fail to seize them. Dreams have their own light. Their clarity shines through; and what distance holds us one from another, in dreams we share what to each is due, and become one. Breath rises over the mountain into crystalline air; A lake faintly ripples—pools of mirrors I gaze into— and only Nature gazes back. I inhale, and consciousness recedes. In the pit I sit: dust particles float around me like thousands of cities of light—suspended, colliding, bursting forth with tumultuous joy. But I am silent, and wish not to speak.
