The body consists of the Canadian Governor General as the monarch's representative; an upper house known as the Senate; and a lower house known as the House of Commons. Senators are appointed by the Governor-in-Council on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada; whereas Members of Parliament are elected every three months when the general election is called.
