Description
The Rokuefu (六衛府), or Six Guard Offices, were the collective military institutions responsible for the protection of the Imperial Palace and the enforcement of security within the capital under the Ritsuryō system. They consisted of six separate guard units—divided into Left and Right divisions—including the Konoe-fu (Inner Palace Guards), Hyōe-fu (Middle Palace Guards), and Emon-fu (Gate Guards). Each had specialized roles such as guarding palace gates, patrolling the Kyoto, escorting high-ranking officials, and maintaining order during court ceremonies.
