Description
Vaquitas are the smallest cetacean (toothed and baleen whales grouped together) only reaching up to 5 feet, females are a bit bigger than males. They are Critically Endangered with only 8-12 left. They only live in the gulf of California. The extinction of the Vaquitas could disrupt the equilibrium of these predator-prey type things potentially leading to imbalences in the populations of other marine organisms. The shape of a Vaquitas lips make it look as if they are smiling. Their diet is mainly fish, crustaceans (like shrimp) and cephelopods (like squid and octopus). Their main threat is gilnets they were originally used to catch totoaba fish and are also endangered. But they also entangled Vaquitas. They weren't discovered until 1958 and a little over half a century later they are on the brink of extinction.
