The King's Royal Norman Maritime #33316484
Description
The Mamertines were a group of Italian mercenaries, originally from Campania, who played a significant role in the history of ancient Sicily during the 3rd century BCE. Initially hired as soldiers by Greek cities on the island, the Mamertines later turned on their employers, seizing control of the city of Messina around 289 BCE. Their name, derived from the Roman god of war, Mamers, reflects their martial nature. They became notorious for their brutal behavior, engaging in piracy and plundering the surrounding region. Eventually, their actions led to conflict with Carthage and Rome, both of whom sought to control Sicily. The Mamertines' involvement in the First Punic War, particularly their request for Roman assistance against the Carthaginians, helped ignite the larger conflict between Rome and Carthage, marking the beginning of Rome's expansion into the Mediterranean.
