THE GERMANIC GUARD LOYAL TO THE EMPEROR & PEOPLE OF ROME The Speculatores were recruited out of the best of the Batavian Cohort, whose purpose is to guard the Emperor and his companions. These Batavians were used not only as guardsmen but also as scouts and enforcers of imperial interests. Skilled in espionage, protection, and reconnaissance, these men had no limits!
