The Empire of the Carthaginians #33381053
OtherENAncient HistoryPunic WarsEducational
Description
Carthage, a powerful ancient city-state located in present-day Tunisia, was founded by the Phoenicians around 814 BC. It grew to become a dominant maritime power in the Mediterranean, known for its trade and commerce. Carthage clashed with Rome in a series of wars known as the Punic Wars, which lasted over a century. The most famous of these conflicts, the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), featured the brilliant ############ general Hannibal, who famously crossed the Alps with elephants. Despite Hannibal's early victories, Rome eventually prevailed, destroying Carthage in 146 BC, marking the end of the city-state's independence and its incorporation into the Roman Republic.
