Description
The Konoe-fu (近衛府), or Inner Palace Guards, was the most prestigious of the Rokuefu, tasked with the direct protection of the Emperor and the innermost areas of the Imperial Palace. Divided into Left (Sakonoe-fu) and Right (Ukonoe-fu) units, its members were typically drawn from the aristocracy, making service in this guard both a military role and a mark of high status. Their duties included guarding the Emperor’s residence, escorting him during movements, and providing security at major court ceremonies.
