The Kingdom was established as a form of government with the coronation of Stephen l as a continuation of the Hungarian Principality in the Carpathian Basin, which had existed since the conquest. After the First World War, Hungary's independence was restored, but the Treaty of Trianon dismembered the former state. The official name of the new "Truncated Hungary" remained the Kingdom of Hungary, its form of government was a kingdom, but the throne remained vacant.
