Description
The United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA), formerly known as the Department of Political Affairs (DPA), is responsible for preventing and resolving conflicts through diplomacy, mediation, and political strategies. It plays a key role in conflict prevention by monitoring global situations, offering early warning, and deploying envoys or special missions to mediate disputes. The DPPA manages special political missions (SPMs) in fragile or post-conflict countries and provides electoral assistance to support fair and credible elections. It also works closely with the UN Peacebuilding Commission and Peacebuilding Fund to help countries sustain peace after conflict. Unlike the Department of Peace Operations (DPO), which oversees peacekeeping missions, the DPPA focuses on behind-the-scenes political solutions and long-term stability through peaceful means.
