Description
The Kapikulu Corps (Turkish: Kapıkulu Ocağı, meaning "Slaves of the Gate") was the permanent, elite standing army of the Ottoman Empire. Formed in the 14th century by Sultan Murad I, this institution played a revolutionary role in transforming the Ottoman state from a regional principality into a global empire. Unlike the feudal provincial forces (Timariots), the Kapikulu were directly loyal to the Sultan, serving as both his personal bodyguard and the backbone of the imperial military.
