Description
Raised during the reign of Henri III, under the name of Compagnie de Carabins which was armed with carbines. Then in 1622 Louis XIII re-equipped the unit with muskets. It was initially named "Compagnie de Mousquetaires" before getting the previously stated names. Louis XIII became captain of the unit in 1634. This guard was disbanded in 1646, but would be raised and disbanded several times throughout history. During Louis XIII's reign it had 100 to 300 men. Men could enter very young, between 16 and 17 years old. The unit was comprised of men from Gascony, Baarn, and subjects from the Kingdom of Navarre.
