Description
The Grenadier-zu-Pferd-Regiment Freiherr von Derfflinger (Neumärkisches) Nr. 3 originated from the Neumark region, located in northeastern Germany. During World War I, the regiment played a crucial role as part of the German Imperial Army. Mobilized in August 1914, it saw action on the Eastern and Western Fronts. In the early stages of the war, the regiment engaged in fierce battles on the Eastern Front against Russian forces. Its cavalry nature allowed for swift maneuvers, and the unit often served in reconnaissance and shock troop roles. As the conflict progressed, the regiment transitioned to the Western Front, where trench warfare dominated. The cavalry's traditional role faced challenges in the trenches, leading to the conversion of many horse-mounted units into dismounted infantry. Despite these changes, the regiment maintained its fighting spirit and adaptability. It participated in major battles, including the Battle of the Marne and the Battle of the Somme.
