𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 - 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 "The Frontier Regiment" The 1st Regiment of Infantry was authorized in December 1836 to replace the revolution's chaotic volunteer system, only to be furloughed by President Sam Houston in May 1837. In late 1838, President Mirabeau B. Lamar aggressively revived the dormant framework under its original legislative title, though his cabinet routinely labeled it the 1st Regiment of Frontier Defense to reflect an overhauled, hostile border policy. Commanded by Colonel Edward Burleson and Lieutenant Colonel William G. Cooke, this regular force grew to roughly 840 full-time soldiers tasked with constructing fortifications and forcibly expelling Native American tribes along a volatile 600-mile line. Because the immense cost of maintaining a standing army drove the young nation into crushing debt, Congress withdrew funding, forcing Lamar to completely disband the regiment in May 1841.
