𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 - 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐲 "The Mounted Riflemen” The 1st Regiment of Cavalry, which succeeded the Texas Legion of Cavalry from the Revolution, is the permanent mounted service formation officially activated on May 22nd, 1837, to provide mobility, reconnaissance, and rapid response across the frontier. Composed of regular army enlistees under Colonels Henry Karnes and Lysander Wells, these regular detachments operated as a disciplined force combining scouting, garrison defense, and offensive campaigns rather than a temporary volunteer corps. Formally authorized and organized under the Act of December 20th, 1836, they patrolled exposed districts, guarded key outposts, and launched strategic counter-offensives beyond the reach of local militias. Their speed and professional training made them the Republic’s primary regular force for securing its wide, contested territory. Regiment Cap: 10
