Description
The French Royal Marines, or Troupes de marine, were formed in 1622, making them the fifth European Marine unit to be established. In 1671, the Marine Royale was a large force with 196 naval vessels, and Colbert planned to create 100 companies of "guardian-soldiers" to serve on the larger ships. However, in 1673, Louvois redirected these men to the French Army, and naval and marine officers had to recruit crews and marines for each ship using a selective conscription system called levées.
