Description
The Madison Township Marshal's Service was originally formed in 1788 as the township's day and nightwatchmen to maintain a formal police presence for military families living near Fort Bale. Following the departure of Pax Britannian forces, Medford families needed security from bandits who profited from plundering the nearby Winchesterian Fur Trade routes. Such events prompted the local army provost Captain Dole L. Smile I along with other officers to retire from their positions to provide fulltime protection to the budding township and their families. With the formation of the court marshal system in 1802, the Madison Marshal was contracted to provide deputies to the Lee County District Court whom would later go on to create the county's official Sheriff's Office in 1848. Today, the Madison Township Marshal's Service acts as the primary law enforcement agency of the township of Madison.
