Description

𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐬 - 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐢𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧 "The Rifles” The 1st Regiment of Riflemen was authorized in December 1836 and expanded by the Act of December 1838 to provide a regular corps of elite marksmen. Formally distinct from line infantry, these regulars were intended to use long rifles and light tactics across the broken frontier terrain. However, due to severe recruitment shortages, the regiment existed entirely on paper as a unit except for a few enlistees and officers who signed up. Had it fully materialized, these mounted riflemen would have scouted and screened army movements. Instead, their intended tactical role during the 1839 campaigns was filled by the Texas Rangers and local citizen units of mounted riflemen, leaving the regiment as a bureaucratic placeholder until it was completely disbanded in 1841. Regiment Cap: 10
