Description
The "Brederode Regiment" was raised in 1580 by colonel IJesselstijn, being one of the permanent standing regiments in Holland always recruiting there. In 1589 it was passed to a colonel Brederode, with the regiment getting its titular name. Then in 1599 the ownership of the regiment was vacant, being led in the field by lieutenant colonel Ghistelles who was killed at Ostende in 1601. However at the battle of Nieuwpoort, it is was present under the command of the 'House of Brederode', with 870 men in 7 companies.
