Order of the Black Ram #33699602
Description
The Republic of Pisa, emerging in the early Middle Ages, became a formidable maritime power by the 11th century. Located in Tuscany, Pisa's strategic position along the Arno River facilitated its rise as a commercial hub. Engaging in trade throughout the Mediterranean, Pisa competed fiercely with Genoa and Venice. The Pisans were pivotal during the Crusades, providing ships and support, which bolstered their wealth and influence. Pisa's naval prowess peaked in the 12th century, capturing the Balearic Islands and parts of Sardinia and Corsica. This expansion, however, sowed the seeds of rivalry, leading to protracted conflicts with Genoa. The decisive Battle of Meloria in 1284 marked a turning point; Pisa suffered a devastating defeat, diminishing its naval power. The subsequent economic and political decline was exacerbated by internal strife and the Black Death. Despite these setbacks, Pisa left a lasting legacy.
