Description
The 88th Regiment of Foot was raised in 1760 by Major John Campbell at Stirling in Scotland. The regiment was raised with the designation of Royal Highland Volunteers but were also informally called the "Campbell Highlanders" due to their colonel's name. The 88th served with distinction among the Hanoverian Army of Observation protecting the Rhine river from French excursions.
