Description
The Security Service (MI5) is the United Kingdom’s domestic intelligence and national security agency, established under statutory authority to protect the nation against threats including terrorism, espionage, cyber-attacks, and subversion. Operating under the executive authority of the Home Secretary and ultimately accountable to Parliament and the Prime Minister, MI5 carries out intelligence gathering, analysis, and operational coordination in support of public safety and national interest. The Service is expressly non-executive in nature; it does not possess powers of arrest or law enforcement. Instead, MI5 works in close partnership with the police, other UK intelligence bodies, and international partners to detect and prevent activities that threaten the country’s internal security. Its operations are governed by the Security Service Act 1989, and subject to oversight by the Investigatory Powers Commissioner and the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament.
